On 12 Jul 1861 Jerome mustered into service with Co. H, of the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Northbridge, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was 20 years, 6 months and 9 days old.
Jerome and Alvin L. Carr, brothers, served together in Co. H of the 15th Massachusetts. Both lived to come home.
On 28 Jul 1864 Jerome mustered out due to expiration of his term of service.
On 28 Apr 1869 Jerome, 28, married Frances Jane Bean, daughter of Hazen O. and Mary Ann (McBride) Bean, at Boston. Frances was the sister of his old comrade in arms, Charles Bean.
About 1878 Jerome and Frances moved from Massachusetts to Kansas, and by 1887 they had moved back to Massachusetts.
He died on 30 Jul 1888 at West Upton, Worcester County, Massachusetts, of cardiac disease and consumption. He was 47 years, 6 months and 27 days old.
