Found in The State 19 January 1919: Three Pass Away of Influenza in Laurens Friday Night: Laurens, Jan. 18-The third influenza epidemic for Laurens, which developed a week ago, is claiming a heavy toll. Yesterday and last night there were three deaths at the Julia Irby Sanitarium. The first was Mrs. Lillier Stevens WIlkes...Later in the day, A. H. Sanders...Last night Mrs. Barksdale, wife of J. C. Barksdale, of Trinity Ridge section passed away after a few days' illness. She was Miss Lever of Columbia and was married to Mr. Barksdale about two years ago. She was an estimable woman and her death is regretted by a large circle of friends she has made since coming to Laurens.


Found in the same paper: The death yesterday in a hospital in Laurens of Mrs. Mary Gertrude Lever Barksdale, wife of J. C. Barksdale of Laurens County and a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Lever of this city, brings sorrow to the many friends of the young woman and of her family in Columbia. She is survived by her husband who is now critically ill with influenza in Laurens, and a two weeks old daughter and by her parents and the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. J. W. Dozier of Cleveland, Mrs. A. J. Goode of Brooklyn, Mrs. Howard S. Jeck of New York City, W. D. Lever, Jr., and W. G. Lever of Columbia. Her death occurred yesterday morning following a short attack of influenza and pneumonia and her remains were brought to Columbia in the afternoon to the family home, 1417 Hampton Street. The funeral services will be held there this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, the Rev. A. N. Brunson, D. D., officiating, and interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery. The following will act as pallbearers: Hughey Tindall, Albert Eleazer, D. A. Pressley, Geo. W. Nickerson, F. D. Lowe, W. E. Aughtry, James B. Spillman and Richard Davis. Mrs. Barksdale was born and reared in Columbia and was widely beloved for the sweetness and sincerity of her nature and the charm of her personality. She was married in December, 1917, and had been living at her husband's country place, "Valley Farm," near Laurens.
