He and Shirley Jones were married 6 October 1955 at Elbert, Texas. She preceded him in death.
Hughes served in the US Army during the Korean War.
He was employed with Megargel Drilling Company for 10 years before going into business for himself as an independent oil producer, farmer and rancher.
He was a member of the Church of Christ and past member of the Hamilton Hospital Board of Directors. He was a lifelong resident of Olney.
Survived by one daughter - Mrs. Jack "Pam" Neal of Olney; one son - H.L. Hughes of Olney; one brother - Frank Baker, Jr. of Lewisville; three grandchildren.
