Alva was born on 19 July 1893 to Edward W and Mary V White. The family appears in the 1900 U. S. Census for Webster County, Iowa, as well as the 1895 Iowa state census.

Alva married Florence McFarland, daughter of Hannah McFarland, sometime before 1915. The couple appear with Florence's mother in the 1920 U. S. Census for Webster County, Iowa. He is also listed as "married" in the 1915 Iowa state census and his WWI draft registration.

One of Alva and Florence's neighbors in Webster, Iowa, was Francis Cunningham. He and his wife, Minnie, appear on the same 1920 U. S. census page with Hannah McFarland and Alva and Florence White.
____________
Sometime before 1930, Alva had married Minnie Fisher Cunningham. Four children from her first marriage are listed in the 1930 census: Mary (16), Thelma (8), Gale (6), and Dale (6). By 1940, only Gale and Dale were living at home. Alva lists Minnie as his wife on his WWII draft registration.
____________
By 1947, Alva had married Lyda Balzer Fitch. The couple lived first in Tustin, California, then moved to Santa Ana. Alva worked as a carpenter for Knott's Berry Farm while living in California. The couple lived several places including Yucca Valley before ending up in Sun City, Arizona.

Alva was very talented, doing things ahead of their time, such as creating pull-out shelves in the kitchen cabinets, something we take for granted now, but wasn't thought of at the time. At one point, he build an addition to join two older buildings originally joined by a breezeway on a home of one of Lyda's daughters.

Alva passed in April of 1972. It would be 11 years before his wife, Lyda, joined him.
