Dr. Samuel Warner was an understudy of Dr. John Blackburn of White Gate, Giles Co., Va. Dr. Blackburn required surgery which he traveled to Richmond, Va. to obtain surgical services. Dr. Sam Warner traveled with him as an assistant and nurse. While in Richmond, Dr. Sam Warner suffered from abdominal distress of unknown origin and was self administering several available drugs for his relief. He died suddenly in Richmond of an apparent accidental overdose of strychnine poisoning (the strychnine vial was located in his living quarters).
