Lewis Baldridge, 73, passed away in Clarkston Sunday, March 17, 2002.

He was born to Lewis and Elsie Mae Baldridge in Monette, Ark., Dec. 27, 1928.

After serving in the Army Air Forces in World War II, he married Allane Richie in Black Oak, Ark., Sept. 13, 1947.

They farmed in Arkansas until he was called back to service in the U.S. Air Force in 1950. Lewis served at various locations, including Newfoundland, Canada; Spokane; Thule, Greenland; and retired while serving in Omaha, Neb., in 1973. While in the Air Force, he achieved the rank of master sergeant.

He worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Spokane from 1973 through 1989. He especially enjoyed his employment with the Postal Service as it allowed him to use his administrative and instructional skills to prepare postmasters for their future assignments. Lewis and Allane moved to Clarkston in 1990.

When he moved to Clarkston, he maintained his membership in the Masonic Lodge. He was an active member of the Clarkston United Methodist Church. Until medically unable, he took pride in keeping up the church lawn. Lewis donated a new riding lawnmower one season, when the old mower became inoperable.

Lewis not only spent 24 years in the Armed Forces, and another 16 working for the Postal Service, but he had another job during his retirement years in Clarkston. He loved to play cards. Many friends were made at the card table. The socializing with others was the main purpose of his treks to the card room.

Lew is survived by Allane, his wife of 54 years, at the Clarkston home. Other survivors include son, Leon of Spokane; daughters, Sheila Manis and husband, John, of Clarkston, Rita Harris and husband, Richard, of Kennewick, and Darlene Samuelsen and husband, Don, of Seattle. Grandchildren include Douglas Manis of Seattle, Katie Baldridge of Albuquerque, N.M., Rob Harris of Eugene, Ore., and Sarah Manis Craber of Clarkston.

Funeral arrangements were made through Merchant Funeral Home in Clarkston. A memorial service is at 2 p.m. today at the Clarkston United Methodist Church.

Memorials may be made to the Clarkston United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
