Daughter of Elias Wellborn and Mary Marshall. Married Waters Briscoe on 27 July 1826 in Columbia Co., Georgia.

From "Wayfarers In Walton" by Anita Sams, page 832:

On a hill which slopes gently down to McCaniel Street in Monroe stands the Briscoe-Selman home, built about 1832 and continuously occupied by descendants of the original family. Long ago, the elevation provided its name, The Hill. Today, the antebellum architecture, with white columns and wide veranda, adds a story-book quality to the structure which was sheltering its first family when Atlanta was founded.

Here, Waters Briscoe, one of Walton County's pioneer settlers, and his bride, Martha Wellborn Briscoe, began their life together. Her parents were Elias and Mary Marshall Briscoe (sic). Her grandfather, the Rev. Daniel Marshall had, in the spring of 1772, established the first Baptist Church in Georgia at Kiokee Creek, 20 miles from Augusta. Waters was the son of Truman and Catherine Dunn Briscoe of Virginia. A first honor graduate in one of the University of Georgia's earliest classes, he went to Columbia County to marry Martha. They returned to Walton to live.

Waters and Martha Briscoe's chilcren were Lucillus, Walter Elias, and Mary Virginia. The last named was born in Monroe in 1827 and became the wife of George Cowan Selman. After his wife's parents' deaths, George Selman bought the interests of his brothers-in-law in the family residence, and it became known as the Selman home. The house, which in the beginning consisted of five rooms, grew along with George and Mary Virginia Selman's family until it reached its present size of 15 rooms.
