He was born September 2, 1920, in Dunkirk, a son of the late Thomas E. Sr. and Jennie Bautz Baxter.
Mr. Baxter retired October 1, 1982, after 43 years as a welder for U.S. Steel.
After attending Monongahela High School, he served in the U.S. Navy as a machinistÕs mate, second class during World War II, stationed in New Guinea and Australia.
Mr. Baxter was a member of First Baptist Church in Monongahela and Carroll Township American Legion Post 949.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Dorothy Fynes Baxter, whom he married May 10, 1946; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Carol Baxter III of Monongahela; a daughter, Vickie Shurgott of New Eagle; three sisters, Catherine Liparulo, Rose Gust, and Doris and husband H. Lee Buell, all of Monongahela; six grandchildren, Stephanie and husband Roger Wineland of Monongahela, Jennifer and husband Vincent Scalzo of Bethel Park, Thomas Baxter IV of Monongahela, Samuel Shurgott of Wildwood, N.J., Nicholas Shurgott of Katy, Texas, and Stephen Shurgott of New Eagle; a great-granddaughter, Rhiannon Wineland; and a sister-in-law, Wilda Baxter of Monongahela.
Deceased are three brothers, Albert, James and Paul Baxter; and six sisters, Eugenia Baxter, Elizabeth Henderson, Ella Mae Good, Martha Frye, Bertha Bozovich and Colleen Tosi.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Marshall Marra Funeral Home, 216 Chess Street, Monongahela, 724-258-6767, www.marshallmarrafuneralhome.com. At the request of the family, services will be private. Interment will be held in Monongahela Cemetery.
