I loved my Great Grandmother. She was so sweet, and she took an interest in me. She used to ask me a question, and if I couldn't answer it, she'd smile and gently, very gently, squeeze my cheek between her forefinger and thumb. If I got the answer, there would be laughing and hugging.

One summer I got to visit her in Oklahoma for a few days, by myself. It was a lot of fun for a city boy. One of the highlights was when we opened her storm cellar, climbing down into spider webs and damp smells. I was impressed by all the jams and jellies she had canned and was storing there.

She died at the age of 85, I was 15. I attended the church services with my parents, I passed by her open casket, and was very impressed with the energy in that little Baptist church.

I only have fond memories of her. - Steve Burton 05 Aug 2017.
