When Norma Lee was about 4 years old, she suffered serious burns when a lantern was accidently knocked over and ignited a fire in a woodshed she was in where a family member was chopping wood. (In Colorado). Her clothing caught fire. Her family, in fact, came out to Portland, Oregon after that happened in the Dornbecker Children's Hospital being located there and their being able to provide more in the way of the care she needed.

When she was 13, she and her siblings went on a summer church outing to a park located on the Columbia River near Portland, Oregon and she wandered out too far in the river while playing in the water and she was suddenly swept away. Efforts were made by many to try to rescue her but they were unable to do so.
