While serving in the 349th Bomb Squadron, 100th Bomb Group during World War II, the plane, "This N That", piloted by Charles E Baker, was shot down over Kovarska Czechoslovakia. Eugene Damrel's hand was shot off during the fight but he parachuted safely. Captured by the Germans and was held as a prisoner until exchanged in 1945 and arrived back in the States aboard the exchange ship, Grepsholm.
