Hendrik was the son of Steven & Gese (Rutgers) Wolters. He immigrated from Grafschaft Bentheim, Prussia to Allegan County, Michigan (Grafschaap) leaving Europe from a port in the Netherlands in 1870. The ship fare was $12. It took him 12 years to save up the money to send for his fiance and her family (mother and a few siblings), who all came over in 1882. Hendrik and Wilhelmina were married on 3 January 1883 and had 7 children (6 lived to adulthood).
