CARTERVILLE, Mo. — A Miami, Okla., man had been unconscious but breathing on his own Wednesday afternoon after his car ran off Highway 171 and landed on a log in Center Creek, a mile east of Carterville.

But Tommy K. Burkybile, 28, died early Wednesday night at Freeman Hospital West in Joplin, said Newton County Coroner Mark Bridges. Burkybile had been taken to the hospital by helicopter ambulance.

The eastbound car ran into the median, went down an embankment, struck a bridge pillar and came to rest in the creek, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The

accident was reported at 2:23 p.m.

Dusty Vandergrift, a Carterville firefighter who went to the driver's aid, said he believed the car rolled over at least once while going down the embankment, then landed upright.

"The roof had collapsed," Vandergrift said. "The car was on a log."

Water had rushed into the vehicle, but about a foot of air space remained, Vandergrift said. "He was strapped in the car, and there was just enough room for his head above water," he said.

The car's air bag deployed and then deflated during the accident.

"He was unconscious, and the way he was lying, he was upright and leaning to the middle a little," Vandergrift said. "He was breathing on his own."

Vandergrift said he lives about three blocks from the Carterville fire station. He said he was the first person out of the firetruck and the first person who got to the driver at the accident scene.

Vandergrift said he believes that the air bag helped the driver during the accident, and that the seat belt "was holding him up."

In addition, Vandergrift said, "If it had not been for the log, the car would have been completely submerged."

He estimated that the car landed about 10 feet from the west bank of Center Creek.

The accident marked the third time this year that a vehicle has run off Missouri 171 into the median and plunged into Center Creek, Vandergrift said. He said that in the previous accidents, one man survived and a Carthage girl died.
