Alva Harry Burnett was the son of Hezekiah Burnett and Dicy Mahala LeMon. He was the husband of Lula Friend McKown and they had five children at the time of his death - Mildred, William, Dorothy, Margaret and Sandra Kay Burnett. He also had two sons from 2 previous marriage - Walter S Burnett and Gilbert H Burnett.
He was a city police officer for the City of Pierre, South Dakota.

Patrolman Alva Burnett was shot and killed after responding to a domestic disturbance for the second time in the same night. Prior to the second call, the suspect had doused his wife with gasoline and lit her on fire. Patrolman Burnett was attempting to talk to the suspect, who was standing in the doorway to the home, when the man suddenly raised his 410 gauge shotgun and shot Patrolman Burnett.

The suspect was also killed at the scene.
