Amelia Rangel Benavides (1929 - 2012)

Amelia Rangel Benavides passed away Sunday, March 18, 2012, surrounded by family and friends at a local hospice. Funeral: 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Interment: Mount Olivet Cemetery. Rosary: 6 p.m. Thursday at Mount Olivet Funeral Home.

Amelia was born Jan. 11, 1929, the eldest of seven sisters. She attended business college in Fort Worth and worked for Panther Oil and Grease. She married her childhood sweetheart, Roy Benavides, shortly after he returned from serving in World War II. Like so many strong women of her generation, Amelia left work, spending her full time managing her household, balancing budgets, cooking, sewing and nurturing her growing family. Together with Roy, she raised five children. Amelia was a very devout Catholic and a very active supporter of her parish, Holy Name of Jesus, which she attended since moving within the neighborhood in 1957. She taught Sunday school classes for the parish for 28 years, and was a eucharistic minister, and a member of the Legion of Mary, and served in several volunteer positions throughout her lifetime. Lovely and feminine her entire life, she had a special devotion to the Virgin Mary, and the Sisters of Mary of Namur. After all her children were grown and living independently, Amelia returned to work, first serving as an "Avon Lady," and later worked at Sears for a number of years. She loved her TOPS Club and all of its members. Always a gentle and loving person, Amelia will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of her acquaintance.

Survivors: Husband of 64 years, Roy Benavides; sons, Ron Benavides and wife, Lynn, Paul Benavides, Brian Benavides and Donald Benavides; daughter, Susan Elizabeth Calvin and husband, Dan; she was also devoted to her "sixth child," lifelong friend, Leitha Russell Parra; brother, John Rangel and wife, Lupe; sisters, loving and devoted sister, Edith Vela and husband, Gilbert, Helen Vigil and husband, Alfred, and Susan Lopez; sister-in-law, Emma Lyon, as well as Edith Vela, who were also a comforting presence at her bedside at the end of her life; 11 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
