60th U.S.C.T.
The 60th U.S.C.T. began service as the 1st Iowa Colored Infantry in 1863. It was composed of six companies recruited in Iowa (about 600 men, a very large portion of all black Iowans eligible for service) and four companies recruited in Missouri. In March 1864, the unit was federalized and re-designated the 60th Regiment, United States Colored Troops. It served mainly in Arkansas, and suffered 12 battle deaths and 332 deaths by disease
