Barry J. Barnett, 54, left this world to join his Lord and Savior on March 10, 2012 after finishing his final 15K DINO series race at Eagle Creek State Park. He was born October 20, 1957 to Richard and Helen Barnett of Amity, Indiana, where he lived his entire life. As a 1976 graduate of Edinburgh High School, he went on to earn his Journeyman's Card for the Sheet Metal Workers International Association where he worked for many years. Although his career began as a sheet metal worker, he later transitioned into farming, eventually taking over the family farm.
Barry's life was focused on family and faith. He leaves behind his wife, Diane (Bullington), of 28 years, and their four children: Kelly Barnett of Jackson, Tennessee (26), Josh Barnett (25) and wife Kaicy of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Nathan Barnett (21), and Leslie Anna Barnett (18), both of Amity, Indiana. Barry served as an elder and Sunday school teacher at Franklin Memorial Christian Church in Franklin, Indiana for many years.
Barry combined his love for sports and his love for the Lord when he started the ministry of Bravehearts Girls Basketball. Over the past 11 years, he coached and taught over 200 girls the fundamentals of faith and basketball. He measured his success by the growth of the girls, while others may have measured it by their multiple national championships and other tournament titles.
In addition to Bravehearts basketball, Barry was an avid runner and participated in numerous races including over 30 marathons. Just this year, he finished marathons in Arizona and the Bahamas. He was a proud supporter of the Notre Dame football team, and the women's and men's basketball programs. He also coached girl's basketball at Edinburgh, Indian Creek, and Hauser. Barry was a member of the Johnson County Historical Society and took a great interest in researching his family's genealogy. For the past 25 years he has been involved with the Johnson County Soil & Water Conservation Board, most recently serving as chairman. In 2005, he was named Indiana's River Friendly Farmer of the Year.
Additional survivors include his brothers, Les Barnett (Dana) of Lebanon, Ohio, Rick Barnett (Lydia) of Naperville, Illinois, Chris Baker (Sandy) of Greenville, South Carolina, and Greg Baker (Debbie) of Edinburgh, Indiana; 22 nieces and nephews; 27 great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Millie (Baker) Parmerlee Robertson. He was looking forward to the arrival of his first grandchild in July.
Visitation will be held Friday, March 16, from 2 P.M. until 8 P.M. at Franklin Memorial Christian Church, 1720 Graham Road, Franklin, Indiana. A Celebration of Life will be conducted on Saturday, March 17, at 10 A.M. at the church. A private burial service will follow at Hamner Cemetery in Amity, Indiana. Arrangements are being handled by Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center in Franklin, Indiana.
