SOUTH BEND - Richard Allan Emge, age 76, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away on March 6, 2012. Richard was born on July 24, 1935, the second of 11 children born to Richard and Gertrude (Wipf) Emge of Evansville, Indiana. He attended Sacred Heart Church and Grade School and Mater Dei High School where he was a cheerleader and band member. He received the Arion Music award in 1953. He was also very active in Boy Scouts and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

He earned his undergraduate degree from St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas and his Master's Degree in Government from the University of Notre Dame. His teaching career with the Holy Cross Brothers took him to high schools in New Orleans and Chicago, as well as St. Joseph High School in South Bend. At the time of his retirement, he was the Assistant Director of the Center for Continuing Education at Notre Dame. Over the course of forty years with the University, he made many lasting friendships. Richard had a fondness for gardening and reading. He was a loyal fan and season ticket holder of Notre Dame football and basketball tickets. He and his daughter treasured these many years of afternoons and evenings spent together. Richard also enjoyed times with his family in Evansville, Indiana sitting in the side yard of his parents' home under the branches of a shade tree.

On November 26, 1971, he married Sheila Dempsey. She survives, as well as their daughter, Sarah (Shawn) Brovold and granddaughter, Hannah Maureen. On August 19, 1993, he married Tanya Michen. She survives, as well as her son, Chad (Tara) Michen and her grandchildren, Bryce and Aubrey. Also surviving are his brother, David Emge of New York; sisters, Pat Smead, Sue (Robert) Berry, Kate (Robert) Wittgen, and Barb (Allen) Rexing; and sister-in-law, Joan Emge, all of Evansville, IN; aunt, Joanna (George) McMinn of Paducah, KY; and several nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Gertrude (Wipf) Emge; brothers, Charles, Walter, Wayne, and Melvin; and sister, Judith Emge.
