Eric J. Verteramo was a 1992 graduate of Linton High School. He then graduated from Schenectady County Community College with an associate's degree in criminal justice. Eric then graduated on the national dean's list from the University of New Haven in Connecticut with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice where he majored in forensic science.

Upon completion of the police academy, Eric joined the Schenectady Police Department in 1997 and had been a patrolman, most recently in the Bellevue neighborhood, until the time of his death. He was instrumental in starting the gymnasium at police headquarters and had been a member of the Police Benevolent Association since joining the force.

Eric loved baseball and had played all his life, including Northside Little League, Linton High School, Schenectady County Community College and the Albany Twilight League. Eric was a member of theAll American Health & Fitness Club in downtown Schenectady. Eric loved to be in the outdoors where he fished, camped and tended to his flower and vegetable garden.

Eric is survived by his parents; two brothers; paternal grandmother, Theresa and grandfather, the late Anthony Verteramo of Schenectady; maternal grandmother, Rose (the late Louis) Lezzi of Schenectady; uncle; nephew; cousins; his companion, Melissa and her son. Eric was predeceased by his Aunt Sylvia Affinito , who died in 1997.

During the early evening hours of April 11, 2004, Officer Verteramo responded from Bellvue to a motorcycle - pedestrian accident at State and Furman Streets. While northbound on Broadway, about 500 feet north of Lower Broadway, Officer Verteramo failed to negotiate a curve and struck a utility pole across from 824 Broadway. Schenectady Police and Fire Communications received several calls about the crash, and dispatched police and rescue personnel to the scene. Officer Veteramo was extricated from the vehicle by Schenectady Fire Department personnel and rushed to Ellis Hospital with head and upper-body trauma. A short time later, Officer Verteramo was airlifted by Med Flight to Albany Medical Center for further treatment. Later that evening, Officer Verteramo died from his injuries. (bio by Eamonn)
