E. Basil Huckaby passed away on Feb. 13, 2012, at age 86, in a local nursing home. Basil Huckaby was born to Robert Gould Huckaby and Stella Booth Huckaby in Ranger, Texas, on Aug. 2, 1925.

Upon graduating high school, Mr. Huckaby's patriotism urged him to join the military where he participated in WWII. Basil served on board the USS Salt Lake City (1942-1945) where he was a radioman 3rd class. While onboard the USS Salt Lake City, he participated in many maritime battles following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. During the Aleutian Island campaign, his ship took a direct hit from a Japanese ship, and upon an investigation of the incident, Mr. Huckaby was awarded the Purple Heart.

Upon honorable discharge, Basil made his home in San Angelo where he became a prominent businessman, entrepreneur, and had much success in real estate.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Nell Huckaby and his son, Kevin Huckaby, both of San Angelo; his brother, John Robert Huckaby and wife Betty of Rome, N.Y.

A visitation for friends and family to gather will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20, at Johnson's Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Johnson's Funeral Home chapel with burial to follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
