Dr. Brown fought in the Civil War. He enlisted in 1861 and was assigned to CO. A 18th Illinois infantry. He fought in the battles of Fort Henry, Fort Donelson, Shiloh and the siege of Corinth. Physical disability caused his honorable discharge from the army before the close of the war.
Dr. Brown opened his office at Benton and was the only man with requisite skill to perform surgical operations in the county.
In 1862 Dr. Brown married Mary V. Coleman, they had two daughters; Addie M. (McClelland) Brown and Mary V. (Scott) Brown Mrs. Brown died in 1867 and he married Nancy A, Burns, Dr. Burns daughter. They had 4 children; Effie (topping) Brown; Pearl (Mills) Brown; Harry M. Brown and Stanley Brown.
