Mr. Howell was born in McDonough, Henry County, Georgia, and was raised in Jacksonville, then Tampa, Florida.

When WWI broke out, he signed up for the draft along with his father and brother, Blanchard. He fought as a sergeant in the 13th Company, Coast Artillery.

After the war, he married Vilma Britton Simonton on 23 April 1920. They had two children, but the marriage did not last and were divorced in 1928. On 30 Oct 1928, Charles married Francis L. Spader in Butler, Ohio. It was the second marriage for both, but unfortunately this marriage did not last. He married Irene Vincent Dye on 5 July 1932 in Ashville, North Carolina. They had one child.

He is survived by wife of 20 years, his three children, one brother, grandchildren, and numerous family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
