Mary attended Agnes Scott in Decatur. She was both intelligent and accomplished. Among her many suiters was a young man by the name of Bob Howell, who she married. Robert Lee Howell was the son of Humphrey Posey Howell and Eugenia California Blanchard Howell of Salt Springs, Douglas County, Georgia. He was also the grandson of Isaac Howell of the Howell-Green Ferry (one of the 200 ferries crossing the Chattahoochee River into Atlanta) and the first cousin, once removed, of Clark Howell, former editor of The Constitution in Atlanta.
The marriage produced three children: Charles Russell Howell (1894-1952), named for his maternal grandparents; Posey Blanchard Howell (1896-1972), named for his paternal grandparents; and Robert Zachry Howell (1909-1937, named for his parents.
Although she spent most of her married life in Florida, where her husband's job carried them, she never ceased to be a Georgian at heart. She was a devout Christian, which sustained her during the rough times she encountered in life. She outlived both parents, her husband, and all but one of her siblings (her sister, Thornton), and one of her children.
