VERNON LEROY KERNS
Former Safeway official dies in Vehicle incident
Vernon Leroy Kerns, retired regional manager of the Eastern Division of Brookside's Safeway plant here, died at Texoma Medical Center about 4:30 p.m. Monday. Kerns was driving a 1985 Chrysler in the 900 block Main Street) Texas 75A) when for some reason his car veered to the left, crossed the median and two oncoming traffic lanes and ran into the Bassham Antiques house. He was taken to TMC by a city ambulance. Authorities are not certain whether Kerns died as a result of injuries in the accident, from other problems, or a combination of both. An autopsy has been ordered. Witnesses told police the vehicle was headed west on Main and it started veering to the left without braking. A truck, headed east on Main, saw the Chrysler headed his way and stopped. After the vehicle hit the house, people nearby gave aid to Kerns until the ambulance arrived. He died a shot time later. Although it is uncertain whether Kerns death will be attributed as traffic, three others have died in traffic accidents in Denison this year.
Kerns was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and attended school there. He went to business school and began his career with Safeway there. He was a bookkeeper in the Western States Wholesale Co and moved to Kansas City, Mo., where he operated Table Products in 1939. In 1950 he moved to Denison plant. He was promoted to regional manager of the Eastern Division of Brookside in Washington, D.C., and then with another promotion was returned to the Denison area. During his career, he was active in civic affairs including, serving as Denison Lions Club president, commander of the American legion, and chairman of the Grayson County, Red Cross, and Denison Red Cross campaigns, and was an active Masonic Lodge member.
He married Celia Lewis in Denison.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Johnson-Moore Funeral Home.
