GALATIA -- Lucille Aline "Ma" (Sullivan) Abbott, 91, went home to be with the Lord at 4:20 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012, in Parkway Manor Nursing Home in Marion, surrounded by her family, who loved her dearly.
She was born March 9, 1920, in Franklin County to George "Poppy" and Lena (Dorris) Sullivan. She was the eldest of three children.
Ma had two sisters, Veta Mae (Earl) Smith, who preceded her in death, and Wilma (Joe) Todd of Thompsonville. She also was survived by several nieces and nephews.
She married the love of her life, the Rev. Gene Abbott, on Sept. 5, 1941. And, he passed away Jan. 8, 1973. They shared 32 years together, which she always cherished.
Of their blessed union, they had three children, Shirley (Gilbert Virlile) Beers and Betty (Johnny) Gogue, both of Galatia, and their son, Carl Edward Abbott, who went home Oct. 27, 2003, to be with both of his fathers. She also was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Carl Steiner.
Ma loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Most of the time, she could tell you how many she had! Her grandchildren are Cheryl (John) Stallings of Galatia, Terry (Michelle) Beers of Harrisburg, Jerry (Kristy) Beers of Galatia, Stephen (Nicole) Steiner and David (Becky) Steiner, both of Thompsonville, April (Jason) Baxter of Sesser and Julie Emberton and Brooke (Billy) Carlton, both of Galatia, and Crystal Gogue, who went home Aug. 26, 1996, to be with the Lord, and Jeffery Lee Beers, who went home July 3, 1966, to be with the Lord. She also had 20 great-grandchildren.
She accepted Jesus at a young age and attended Galatia First Baptist Church, where she had been a member since July 2005. She loved her Lord and wanted to make sure all of her family knew him, too.
Ma worked as a homemaker for most of her life. She worked for Mark Twain Boat Company after Pa passed on, and her last job was working at Galatia High School, alongside Shirley, as a substitute cook. Many times, you could find her there, helping cut up lettuce and doing other jobs, even if she had not been called in.
Those who knew Ma will never forget her. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her, but her family knows where she is -- where she has wanted to be for a while -- alongside Pa and all of her other family and friends, who are already in Heaven.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012, in Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia, with Larry Miller officiating. Burial will be in Logan Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
