In 1861, at the start of the Civil War, Kiser joined as a Lieutenant in the 7th Georgia Regiment. He was elected Captain, then promoted to Major. Although he was shot in the hand at Manassas, and in the lung at the Wilderness, he served throughout the entire war, from its beginning until the end in 1865.

Following The War, Major Kiser and his brother, M.C., were well known Atlanta businessmen, making their money in dry goods and wholesale shoes.
In 1871, he married Agnes Lane, daughter of General James T. Lane of Athens, Tennessee. She died a year later. He married again in 1879. His second wife was Mary Cobb Hood, daughter of Judge Arthur Hood.

He had several serious bouts with bronchitis in the year and half before his death from the illness in July of 1882.
His obituary in the Atlanta Constitution describes his last moments with this:
"As he struggled for breath, he motioned to his wife and his brother, M.C. Kiser, to come nearer to him. They did so, and he placed one arm tenderly about the neck of his wife and the other around his brother and almost immediately expired."
Although he left no will, at the time of his death, his worth was estimated to be a over three-quarters of a million dollars (a huge sum during that day).
The Kiser Family plot is one of the most beautiful in Oakland Cemetery.
