Bettie B. Carpenter, 85, beloved wife, mom, grandma, greatgramma and friend, died peacefully Tuesday, October 2, 2012, surrounded by loving family, at the home of her daughter in Waynesburg, after being in failing health for the past several years.

She was born February 11, 1927, in Glen Easton, W.Va., a daughter of the late William Benton and Lena May Gatrell Blake.

Mrs. Carpenter was a 1945 graduate of the former Richhill Township High School in Wind Ridge.

On September 30, 1946, she married S. Burdette Carpenter, who died April 18, 2005. She was a resident of Center Township all of her married life.

She was very active in the community throughout her lifetime. She was a member of Rogersville United Methodist Church, where she taught the Good Cheer Bible Class for more than 40 years, as long as her health permitted. She also served as a representative to the Charge Conference multiple times, was a member of United Methodist Women and the church choir, a volunteer with vacation Bible school and enjoyed attending Bible studies, revivals and other social gatherings at the church.

Mrs. Carpenter was an active member of the former Greene County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, including being president for many years. She also was a member of the former Waynesburg Elks Lodge and a member of Lions Club and Harvey's Grange.

She was a former tax assessor and served as a judge of elections, both in Center Township, and served as an officer for the Pennsylvania Association of Retired State Employees. She worked at the former Cameron pottery in West Virginia before her marriage. She then worked in various capacities on the family farm and at the former Dairy Delite in Waynesburg, until her youngest daughter was born in 1962. She operated the Carpenter family dairy thereafter, until her retirement in 1980.

Mrs. Carpenter and her late husband enjoyed attending sales and auctions, musical events, square dances, traveling and playing card games, especially Cinch, with their many friends. In later years, she became an avid reader. Her ever-present smile, character and wit will be sorely missed by many.

Surviving are four children, John, husband of Holly Carpenter, Linda, wife of Tad Klaner, Kevin, husband of Armina Carpenter and Peggy Carpenter; granddaughters Heather Klaner-Wilson, Tiffany, wife of Thomas Hart, Angie, wife of Luke VanDyne and Jessica L. (JL) Carpenter; grandsons Jason, husband of Melissa Carpenter, Todd, husband of Erin Klaner, Justin, husband of Jessica Carpenter and Glenn Klaner; greatgranddaughters Sydknee Carpenter, Kaylen Wilson, Mackenzie Carpenter, Lexie VanDyne, Teagan Klaner and Ealyn Klaner; great-grandsons Ian VanDyne and Mason Carpenter; and many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins.

Deceased, in addition to her parents and husband, are a son, Donald Carpenter; a brother, George A. Blake; and a sister, Allie Sampson.

She was the last of her immediate family.

Friends will be received from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday in Rush Funeral Home Inc., Rogersville, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 6, with the Rev. Bruce Judy officiating. Interment will follow in Rosemont Cemetery, Rogersville. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Rogersville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 315, Rogersville, PA 15359.
