Great-Grandson of Robert Wallace and Esther Boyd Wallace, of Leroy Newman and Mary Brown Newman, of William Armstrong and Margaret "Peggy" Jameson and of Joseph R. McCutcheon and Nancy Youell McCutcheon.
His Mother, Rachel, passed away in 1869, (a day after giving birth to his youngest sister, who died only 2 months later) when James Wallace was seventeen years old. The following year, his father married again, and Mary Margaret Coffman became his step-mother.
James is the brother (mother, Rachel) of William Armstrong Wallace (Wife Mary Agnes "Minnie" Hobson Wallace), Alexander D H "Alec" Wallace (Wife, Nannie Coffman Wallace), Thomas Archibald Wallace (Wife Blanche Phelps Wallace), Ella Virginia "Eileen" Wallace (Mrs. Henry Hanson), John Morgan Wallace (1st Wife, Nellie Beaty Wallace, 2nd Wife, Daisey Walser Wallace), Lula Katherine Wallace (Mrs. Samuel Miller Davidson) and Rachel Elizabeth Wallace;
Half-brother (step-mother, Mary Margaret Coffman Wallace) of Minnie Gertrude Wallace (Mrs. George Washington Yeago), Charles Eugene Wallace (wife, Fannie MacKay), Orlena Wallace (who died at the age of 2 years of whooping cough and pneumonia), Nettie Wallace (Mrs. Louis McNulty), Albert Newman Wallace (wife Lula Adella Brownlee Wallace), Maude M. Wallace (Mrs. John Olin Campbell), Allen Boyd Wallace (wife Florence Stringfellow Wallace) and Olive Cooper Wallace (Mrs. Bernard Peyton Allen).
Step-brother of Edward Thomas Towberman (wife Emma Jones Towberman & later Florence Blanche Lair Towberman) and of William Kenneth Batis (Wife, Willie Archer Lewis Batis).
James worked on the family farm in Craigsville until he moved into Lynchburg to live with his brother William and sister, Eileen Wallace in the lmid-1800's; he then went to work as a clerk for the Railroad, becoming the Chief Clerk for Southern Railway in 1900.
In 1890, James married Nora Engledove in Lynchburg.
In 1892 they became parents of a daughter, Mary Eileen Wallace.
James passed away in January 1922 of Kidney Disease. He is buried beside his wife and daughter in the Engledove Family Plot in Spring Hill Cemetery in Lynchburg.
