Wayne Mercer, age 83, passed away on Thursday, March 17, 2005. Wayne was born on March 17, 1922 in Kingsbury, TX. After graduation, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps serving with pride and distinction in World War II as a member of the 491st Bombardment Group H as a flight gunner. The 491st was known as 'the last and the best' among their fellow soldiers, proudly flying missions over Germany, France, & Normandy. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, and 4 Bronze Stars. After retiring from the civil service he owned and operated Mercer Marine locally in Universal City for 23 years. He was a Master Mason for over 50 years. He is preceded in death by his wife Lena Mercer and survived by his sons, Larry & daughter-in-law Dorothy Mercer, and Gary & Linda Mercer, 8 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren. A graveside service & interment will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on March 21st at 11:00 AM. P.S., Mom & Dad, one heck of a fishing team. Arrangements with: Schertz Funeral Home.
