William was a crewman aboard the SS Marine Electric when she went down in heavy seas on Feb. 12, 1983. Thirty-one of the 34 member crew were lost when they had to abandon ship in frigid 39 degree water about 30 miles east of Chincoteague, VA.
The SS Marine Electric was a 605 ft. coal ship out of Norfolk, headed for Boston. Her sinking motivated tightening of inspection standards; mandatory survival suits for winter North Atlantic runs and was a driving force in the creation of the Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer Program.
According to a newspaper story, in the Boston Herald, Feb. 13, 1983, William's father, Harry Mulberry Jr. reported his son had signed up as a crew member to avoid unemployment, and he was serving his last day aboard the Marine Electric.
