LYMAN L. BENNS SR.
Benton - Lyman L. Benns Sr., 81, of Benton died at 9:14 a.m. Monday, January 30, 2006, in the Franklin Hospital emergency room in Benton. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, at Morton & Johnston Funeral Home, with Bro. Gary Farthing officiating. Burial will be in Masonic & Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton, with full military honors given at the graveside. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, and until the time of services on Thursday, to the funeral home. He was born Jan. 1, 1925, in Benton, the son of George Henry and Cora Mae (Williams) Benns. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, and a member of the American Legion, a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars in Benton, and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Benton and Marion. Mr. Benns was a member of the Church of God in Logan. He was a coal miner for more than 20 years and a member of UMWA. He also owned the Kewpee Cafe in Benton and the Rt. 37 Motel in West Frankfort for several years. Survivors include his wife, Virginia (Bozovich) Benns, whom he married Dec. 24, 1995, in Benton; one daughter, Mary Anne Kline, of Benton; five sons, Lyman Benns Jr. and wife, Jane, James Benns and wife Beth, Dennis Benns and wife, Debbie, Michael Benns and wife, Lisa, and Stephen Benns, all of Benton; two step-daughters, Tammy Young of Snellville, Ga., and Karen James and husband, Kenneth, of Los Angeles, Calif.; and two stepsons, Warren Rice and wife, Karen, of Ewing and Don Rice and wife, Ruth, of Hume, Mo. Other survivors include one sister, Georgia Sandusky and husband, Kenny, of Benton; three grandsons, Adam Benns of Carbondale, Eric Benns and wife, Lora, of Richmond, Ind., and Jeremy Benns of Long Beach, Calif.; six granddaughters, Julie Greisz and husband, Mike, of Mayfield, Ky., Angela Wray and husband, Pat, of Phoenix, Ariz., Deni Benns and fiance, Paul Stallons, of Swansea, Jamie Guzman of Jacksonville, Fla., Lacey Owens and husband, Justin, of Spring Hill,
Tenn., Shawna Benns of Hanford, Calif., and Nikita Benns of Benton; four step grandchildren, Ben Rice and wife, Heather, Josiah and Nicholas Rice, Kushaiah Mercado, Douglas Overturf, and Adam Overturf and wife , Angie; six great-grandchildren, Caleb Garascia, Logan Gayer, Monica Guzman, Braden and Riley Benns and Zach Wray; and six step-great-grandchildren. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather. In times past, he loved to watch his sons play football for the Benton Rangers. It was not always easy to raise six children but he loved his sons and had a special spot in his heart for his "baby" daughter. He and his wife, Jenny, enjoyed dancing together and playing golf. He will be missed by all who loved him! His parents, his first wife, Margaret (Smith) Benns, who passed away Dec. 15, 1993, a sister, Minnie Burlison, and a brother, Luther Williams, preceded Mr. Benns in death.
