Harriet Bethinea Adams was born on 6 May 1855 in White County, Georgia to William Adams and Mary A. "Polly" (Whitley) Adams. (Please refer to the bottom of this bio section for notes regarding discrepancies over her birth year.)

Harriet's siblings were: Edith Catherine "Katie" Adams; James Marion "Jim" Adams; Theodocia "Docia" Adams. Their parents William and Mary died after the 1860 Census and before the 1870 Census. After the death of their parents, Harriet began living in the home of their maternal grandparents. Her siblings Katie and Jim Adams moved to Texas with Katie's husband, and Docia Adams began living with the "Hill family".

Harriet Bethinea Adams never married and she had 5 children (as per the 1900 Census), only 4 of whom are currently known, and all of whom used the Adams surname. The known children were: Missouri C. Adams; Sarah Francis "Fannie" Adams; Dora Adams; Edwin Jack Adams. It's thought that the biological father of the last child (Edwin Jack Adams) was Dr. John Hamlin Alley. Harriet worked in the hotel known as "the Alley House", which was owned by one of Dr. John Hamlin Alley's brothers.

Harriet Bethinea Adams died on 29 April 1937 in Nacoochee, White County, Georgia at the age of 81 years. She is buried at the Nacoochee United Metodist Church Cemetery in Sautee, White County, Georgia.

Records and notes:
- The Death Certificate for Harriet Bethinea Adams is #550 of Nacoochee, White County, Georgia. The informant on the certificate was her daughter, Dora (Adams) Knight. It reflects that Harriet died at the age of 81 years on 29 April 1937, but incorrectly lists the year of birth as being 1865. The headstone for Harriet reflects the correct date of birth as 6 May 1855.
- 1860 Census: She appears in Sonora, Gordon County, Georgia at the age of 7 years with her parents and siblings. They appear as: Wm Adams (38); Mary Adams (34); Edith C Adams (9); Harriet Adams (7); Marion Adams (5); Theodosia Adams (1).
- 1870 Census: She appears in Subdivision 135, White County, Georgia (post office: Cleveland) at the age of 16 years, living in the home of her maternal grandparents, Adam and Catherine Whitley. She was working (probably outside the home) as a "domestic servant". The family appears as: Adam Whitly (70); Catherine Whitly (65); Tilmon Whitly (10); Harriet Adams (16). Tilmon Whitley (age 10) is listed as a son to Adam and Catherine, which is doubtful. He was most likely another grandson.
- 1880 Census: She appears in Nacoochee, White County, Georgia at the age of 24 years. She appears as a "domestic servant" living with a family named "Williams", and she had two children by this time - both of whom are named with Harriet's maiden name, the family surname "Adams". It's unclear if Harriet was working for the Williams, or just living in their home and working elsewhere. The Williams family appears on this 1880 Census as Family #20, and the Adams appear as living in the Williams' home. They appear as: Alfred P. Williams (40) Farmer; Alice H. Williams (26) wife, keeping house; Allen R. Williams (5) son; Edwin P. Williams (2) son; Harriet Adams (24) domestic servant; Missouri C. Adams (4) daughter; Sarah F Adams (8/12) daughter.
- 1900 Census: She appears in Nacoochee, White County, Georgia at the age of 45 years. She appears on this census as "widowed" (although she's not known to have ever married), and as head of house. This is the record which indicates she had 5 children, 4 of whom were living at the time of this census. The family appears as Family #170: Hariet B Adams (45); Fannie Adams (20); Dora Adams (17); Edwin Adams (12). They lived next door to Harriet's first child, Missouri (Adams) Hunter, and her family. And, next door to a family named Knight, who have a son named George that Harriet's daughter Dora later married.
- 1910 Census: She appears in Nacoochee, White County, Georgia at the age of 54 years. She appears as head of house, and her daughter Fannie lives with her. They appear as: Harrett Adams (54); Fannie Adams (30).
- 1920 Census: She appears in Nacoochee, White County, Georgia at the age of 60 years, although she would have been about 65 years old at the time of this census. Her daughter Dora lives with her. They appear as: Harriett Adams (60); Dara Knight (34). The census indicates that both Harriet and Dora were working as Cooks in the Hotel Industry, and lists both as "widowed".
- 1930 Census: She appears in Nacoochee, White County, Georgia at the age of 72 years, although she would have been 75 years old at the time of this census. Her daughter Dora lives with her. They appear as: Harriet Adams (72); Dora Knight (43). A lodger named Lon Shubert (age 74) lives with them. They live next door to Harriet's daughter Missouri and her family.
