United States Congressman. Tredway graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1827 and began a law practice. He was elected in 1844 to represent Virginia's Third Congressional District, serving from 1845 to 1847. After losing his re-election bid, he was a delegate to the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1850.

Tredway was a member of the Virginia Secession Convention in 1861. A "Conditional Unionist," he at first opposed the state's secession, before supporting it after President Lincoln's call to mobilize troops. During the Civil War, he was the Commonwealth's Attorney for Pittsylvania County, and later served as a state Circuit Court judge from 1870 to 1879.
