After studies at Cathedral College and St. Joseph's Seminary, he was ordained a priest by Cardinal Francis Spellman in St. Patrick's Cathedral on May 19, 1951. He was named a monsignor in 1964.On Sept. 15, 1972, he was consecrated a bishop by Cardinal Terence J. Cooke in the cathedral, while serving as vicar general. Bishop Mahoney, a priest for 51 years and a bishop 30 years, held a series of high positions in the archdiocese, including six years as vicar general in the 1970s and vicar of Northern Westchester and Putnam Counties while also serving as pastor of St. John the Evangelist parish in Mahopac, NY. He served as a U.S. Army chaplain from 1954 to 1958 with the 10th Mountain Division, the 69th Training Division as well as with Training Units at Fort Dix, N.J. He remained a Captain in the Army Reserve for eight years after active duty.
