Amos Meeks brought his family to Delaware County in 1839, and within 4 years his sons, Robert and Isaac, would start a business that continues today. In 1841, the Meeks boys started their apprenticeships in the cabinetmaking/undertaking firm of Nottingham & Swain, then at the northwest corner of Main and Jefferson streets. By 1844, they had acquired the company, changing the name to R. & I. Meeks and Co. In 1871, James, who was Robert's son, came into the firm. He and his father managed the furniture manufacturing shop at the southeast corner of Elm and Washington streets, which continued until the building was destroyed by fire in 1890. By 1872, another son, Martin L. had joined the family business and taken charge of the undertaking part. The showrooms were at 115-117 E. Main St. Shown in photo (which accompanied the article) taken in 1880s, are Robert and James. The store continued until 1911 with control going to Martin L., who continued only in the undertaking business. The building was later home to Kirk's Bike and Hobby Shop. The 117 side is still standing.
