Arthur was born in Perham, Minn. to Edward and Martha Mattfeld. He married Leona Gravelle on June 18, 1950. Art worked for US Steel for more than 30 years, retiring as a foreman in 1982. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed camping with his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Leona, in 1995, parents, brothers, Alfred and Edward, and a sister, Florence Carpenter.
Survivors include three sons, Paul (Linda) Mattfeld, Deer River, Minn., Dale (Laurie) Mattfeld, Taconite, Minn., and Dennis (Kim) Mattfeld, Mora, Minn.; four daughters, Mary (Terry) Scovel, Calumet, Minn., Lori (Ronald) Holmied, Deer River, Penny (Richard) Hughes, Grand Rapids, and Jean ( Bruce) Pickering, Mason, Mich.; 19 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Ruth Dotlich, Elaine Bluntach, Elsie Plackner, Jeanette Vail; three brothers, Rueben Mattfeld, Leonard Mattfeld, and Kenny Mattfeld.
Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011 in the Libbey Funeral Home. Visitation will continue on Monday, Sept. 19 in the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Grand Rapids, from 10 until the 11 a.m. service. Pastor Greg DeMuth will officiate. Burial: Itasca-Calvary Cemetery, Grand Rapids.
