John was born March 19, 1930, in Oklahoma City, Okla., the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Matthew Harper Sr.
He earned his doctorate in veterinary medicine from Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Okla.
He served in the United States Air Force.
He worked as a veterinary medical officer for the meat and poultry branch of the U.S.D.A. for 30 years before retiring in 1988.
He was a long time member of the Neosho United Methodist Church, and active in the choir.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Olivene (Porter) Harper; three daughters, Debra (Harper) Devers and husband, Scott Devers, Irving, Texas, Judy (Harper) Spaar and husband, John Spaar, Lee's Summit, Mo., and Rebecca Harper, Round Rock, Texas; four grandchildren, Laura and DeAnn Devers, and Ellen and Blanton Spaar; and a sister-in-law, Barbara Porter, Dallas, Texas. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Grisham.
The family would like to thank Hospice Compassus and the Mount Vernon Veteran's Home staff, they are special people.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, at the Neosho United Methodist Church, with Rev. Dr. Sara Chaney officiating. The casket will be closed at service time and will remain closed. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the discipler's Sunday school class from the church and will be seated as a group at the services in Neosho. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, at Oakwood Cemetery, Waco, Texas. Friends may call at the funeral home, in Neosho, Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., where the family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday evening.
