Came to Washington County, Texas with his parents in 1838 and then on to Limestone County, Texas in 1839. In 1857 he came to Falls County, Texas and raised stock and farmed. That year he married Mary M. Gage. In 1862 he enlisted in the Confederate States Army, serving in Colonel Sweet's Regiment, and participating in the battles of White River and Cotton Plant. He served mainly in Arkansas and Louisiana. He was also a guard of Union prisoners at Rusk, Texas. He and his wife were Democrats and members of the Baptist Church.
