That year he married Mary M. Gage. In 1862 he enlisted in the Confederate States Army, serving in Colonel Sweet's Regiment, and participating in the battles of White River and Cotton Plant. He served mainly in Arkansas and Louisiana. He was also a guard of Union prisoners at Rusk, Texas. He and his wife were Democrats and members of the Baptist Church.
