Mrs. Helen Shaffer, 77, died in an Arlington hospital Saturday afternoon. Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. from the First Baptist Church in Mertens with burial in the Richland Cemetery at Mertens. The rites were conducted by Charles Whitmire, Church of Christ minister of Arlington, and Rev. Richard McClure, pastor of the Mertens Baptist Church.

A native of Irene, Mrs. Shaffer spent most of her life in the Mertens community prior to moving to Arlington 12 years ago.

Surviving are a son, Curtis Shaffer, and a daughter, Mrs. Mary Lou Langford, both of Arlington; a sister, Mrs. Ann Rogers, Austin; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers were Lee Perry, Roy Buie, Sanford Thomas, J. Bryan McCallum, Red Langford and A. C. Hollingsworth. McCormick Funeral Service directed.
