J.A. Tarkington, Related to Author, Dies; Rites Set
Joseph Arthur Tarkington, 78, a retired employee of the Chrysler factory and a cousin of Booth Tarkington, noted Indiana author, died Sunday morning at the Henry County Hospital. He suffered a heart attack last Friday.
He had been employed as a machine operator at the Chrysler plant for the past 20 years and formerly was employed for a number of years at the Willys-Overland plant in Toledo.
Mr. Tarkington was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Hartford, Wis. He was also a member of the Eagles Lodge of New Castle. There are no close relatives.
Friends may call at the Stanley mortuary after 7 o'clock this evening. Services will be conducted in the Stanley chapel Wednesday morning at 10:30 o'clock and burial will be in South Mound Cemetery. Graveside rites will be conducted by the Masonic Lodge.
Added information received from Dale Tarkington -- On December 18, 1898 Joseph married Ethel Ann Robertson in Ripley County, Indiana. To this union two children were born, Sybil Ann and Robert Joseph Tarkington. Sybil Ann, who never married, was born in 1904 and died in 1973. Robert Joseph was born in 1916 and married Betty Jane Hosken in 1947, and to this union four sons, Dale, Dean, David and Daniel were born. Betty died in 2004 and Robert died in 2006. Joseph and Ethel lived separately from the time their son was a small child and she died on January 1, 1954 in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona.
