Born in the Shiloh area of Sumter County, near Turbeville, the 9th of 10 children to Whiteford and Mary Alice Floyd Coker. He learned about hard work on the farm of "Uncle Jim" Floyd.
He served as a deacon and as an elder and enjoyed teaching Sunday School.
