Raymond Chester Baker was born September 4, 1898 near Sutton in Clay County, Nebraska; the son of Samuel and Amanda Overturf. He was one of a family of 10 children. His education was in the elementary grades of Clay and Custer counties in Nebraska. When he became of age he took a homestead thirty-seven miles north of Douglas. He worked as a carpenter in California and in the harvest fields of grain and beets while proving up.

He was married to Lucille Cress August 22, 1925 at Eustis, Nebraska. After living in Nebraska a few years since homesteading he moved to Wyoming to his homestead in 1931. In 1941 he moved nearer to Douglas for the further education of his family, where he resided until his death.

He is survived by his wife of Douglas; five daughters, Shirley Jean Reed, Beverly Rae Chamberlain and Lucille Marjorie (Teil) Chamberlain, all of Douglas; Delores Lorranine Guthrie of Boone, Colorado and Sharon Patricia Quam of Woodland, Cal.; one brother, Ivan D. Baker of Callaway, Neb.; three sisters, Alda Bowman of Phoenix, Az., Nell Barnett of Oregon, and Hazel Latimer of Twin Falls, Id.; 25 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Leonard and Leo; two sisters, Zella Lamb and Christine Gilbert.
