BIOGRAPHICAL SOUVENIR OF THE STATE OF TEXAS p 167. On line at USgenweb, Texas, Fannin County. "Stokely R. Cheney was born in Overton County, Tennessee on 24 December 1819. At the age of ten he moved to Arkansas with his father's family and thence to Texas in 1846 and settled in Hunt County eight miles southwest of Greenville. In March 1852 he moved between the Caddos and was one of the first settlers of that locality, his wagon being the first that was ever in the forks of the Caddos. He cut the first road and led the way for those who came afterward. He bought a track of 500 acres and began farming and stock raising. He served in the Mexican War in 1846 under Captain William Dagley and Colonel William Young: and subsequently served Hunt County as a county commissioner in 1848-49. He tells many interesting stories of his adventures in Texas at an early day and some of the incidents of his life on the frontier illustrate very stongly the hardships and privations which the early settlers of this State encountered in their first endeavors to blaze the way for coming civilization. He married the first time February 2, 1839, Nancy daughter of William B and Rachel (Brown) Hays, of Overton county, Tennessee. This lady died February 15, 1860, having been the mother of ten children, only three of whom, however, ever reached maturity. These were Mary, Minerva and George P. Mr. Cheney married the second time November 20, 1862, Mrs. Sarah Laney, a widow, whose maiden name was Anderson, daughter of John Anderson, Madison county, Tennessee. No children were born to this union. Mr Chaney has llived to a good old age and is still well preserved in body and mind. He has lived a correct, upright life, has always made a good living, and his property has steadily advanced in value with improvements of the country, but he is not rich... he has been content to make for himself and those dependent on him a good living and spend his surplus time and money in benefitting the more needy around him... and no one in need, even at this date, ever goes from away his house in want, if it lies in "Uncle Stokely's" power to do the favor asked... pleasant in conversation and free from show of all kinds ---a gentleman and a Christian..."
