By the time that he was 24, James had moved from his parents' home to a boarding house in Temple, Bell County, Texas. He was single and working there as a carpenter on houses. It was in Bell County, Texas, that James met and married 22-year-old Lyda Reinke who was born in Germany.
On April 19, 1911, James and Lyda had their first child--a boy whom they named Walter James Wimberley. The second and last of their known children was Lorine Alice Wimberley who was born on October 25, 1918, in Tom Green County, Texas, where James was working as a carpenter building houses.
James's wife Lyda died some time between 1920 and 1930, probably in Tom Green County. James continued to live in San Angelo, providing a home for his young children Walter and Lorine.
By 1940 James was working primarily as a carpenter on the Goodfellow Air Force Base, a non-flying air force base which was built in preparedness for the United States entering World War II.
Eventually, James remarried. His second wife was Dessie L. Weaver who was born in 1890 in Mississippi.
James died at the age of 73 on November 6, 1958. He was buried in the Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens in San Angelo, Tom Green County, Texas. His wife Dessie died seven years later and was also buried at Lawnhaven.
