OBITUARY - Statesville Record and Landmark (Statesville, North Carolina) - Mon, Jul 15, 1940 - Page 1 - Alex Cooper Is Taken By Death - Mr. Alex Cooper, 50, well known merchant, dairyman and civic leader in Statesville for more than 25 years, passed away Sunday night about 9:45 o'clock at his home on Boulevard, following a decline in health for nineteen months. He underwent treatment at the H.F. Long hospital for three months, but returned to his home two weeks ago.
Alexander Cooper was born September 1, 1889, at Windsor's Cross Roads, in Yadkin county, a son of the late Turner Alexander Cooper. His mother, Mrs. Bettie Fleming Mills, now resides in Jacksonville, Fla.
November 25, 1909, was the date of Mr. Cooper's marriage to Miss Annie H. Cook, of Statesville, who survives. He leaves also six daughters, Mrs. W. C. Sykes, Jr., Mrs. Reuben Cowles, of Statesville, and Misses Corrin, Willie Mae, Virginia, and Betty Cooper, at the home. There are two grandchildren, Ann Sykes and Alexander Cooper Sykes. His mother, Mrs. Mills, of Jacksonville, also survives, a sister, Mrs. M.M. Brock, of Farmington, N.C.; a brother, Frank Cooper, of Amarillo, Texas; and a half-brother, J. Harold Mills, of Jacksonville, Fla.
Mr. Cooper had been living in Statesville since he was twelve years old.

Funeral services for Mr. Alex Cooper, well known business man and civic leader in Statesville for more than a quarter of a century, who died Sunday night after a long illness, were held from his residence on the Boulevard Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock and interment followed in Oakwood cemetery. The service was conducted by Rev. F.H. Price, pastor of the Race Street Methodist church; Rev. G.W. Vick, of Greensboro, a former pastor of the Race Street church; and Rev. A.C. Gibbs, pastor of the Broad Street Methodist church. Music during the service was by a quartet composed of Mrs. Glenn Muse, Miss Sarah Troutman, Mr. Morris Gray and Mr. John Garrison with Miss Martha McLain, accompanist. There was a violin solo by Miss Troutman.
The attendance at the funeral service was unusually large. Mr. Cooper was popular with many friends and hundreds gathered to pay a final tribute of respect. Cars thronged the street in front of the residence and adjacent side streets. The Iredell county court house was closed during the service.
The active pallbearers were Messrs. T.M. Whitlow, W.C. Sykes, Sr., Charlie Owens, L.W. Gaither, T.S. Coffey and Dr. J.H. Nicholson. Serving as honorary pallbearers were members of the Statesville fire department, the city police department, other city officials and friends.
The floral tribute was unusually large and beautiful. In charge of the flowers were Mrs. Carl Robbins, Mrs. Charlie Owens and Miss Maie Stoner, and members of the Statesville baseball club assisted in carrying the flowers. Two members of the city fire department carried the floral tribute from that organization, with which Mr. Cooper was associated during his membership on the board of aldermen. These flowers were carnations forming a great white cross over seven feet in length.
