John Brasher, 91, of San Angelo died Sunday, May 3, in a local nursing home. Services are pending at Johnson's Funeral Home.

John F. Brasher, 91, of San Angelo passed away on Sunday, May 3, 1998, in a local nursing home. Service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, at Johnson's Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Binnix of Lake View Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Jim Brasher, Joe Brasher, John W. Brasher, Michael Brasher, Donald Brasher and special friend, Ricky Long.

Born in 1906 in Waco, John spent his bachelor days as a cowboy in both New Mexico and in Big Spring, where he met and married Lora Lee Couch. They were wed on Dec. 8, 1940, almost exactly one year before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. They moved to San Angelo prior to John's enlistment in the Army Air Force in May of 1941, after which he was stationed in Sioux Falls, S.D. John and Lora returned to San Angelo to live after his discharge from the service.

He was a longtime member of Lake View Baptist Church and retired from Lone Star Gas Co. in 1971. John was always a big fan and supporter of Lake View High School, backing the Chiefs for years in sports, and throughout the '60s and '70s while he had kids of his own or nieces and nephews attending, you would find him in the stands. Upon his retirement from Lone Star Gas, he became ``Papa'' Brasher to busloads of band kids when he volunteered as a sponsor for out-of-town football games and contests. He knew every one of them by name, and could relate stories of every kind about these ``adopted'' kids for all the years after he could no longer make the trips.

Survivors include his wife, Lora; two sons, Perry Brasher and wife, Linda, of San Angelo and John Daniel Brasher of Albuquerque, N.M.; two daughters, Sarah Williams and husband, Gregg, of Lubbock and Patricia Gray and husband, Tommy, of San Angelo; three grandchildren, Michael Brasher of Ballinger and Donald Brasher and Tiffany Gray, both of San Angelo.

The Leader of the Band is tired, and his eyes are growing old, But his blood runs through my instrument, and his song is in my soul.
My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man:
I'm just a living legacy to the Leader of the Band.
