THOMAS DUNCAN

Thomas Duncan was born in Bigelow, Mo., on Nov. 10, 1860, and died Thursday, April 26, 1945 at Lovilia, Iowa, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Margaret Richmond, where he had been for some time. He had reached the age of 84 years, 5 months and 16 days.

He was married in Omaha, Nebr., on June 7, 1887, to Eliza Ann McGee, who preceded him in death on Dec. 2, 1942.

Soon after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Duncan moved to Melrose, Iowa, where they lived a few years and then came to Chariton and this place was the family home for over fifty years. He had been a faithful member of the Catholic church from early boyhood.

Mr. Duncan was employed with the C. B. & Q. Railway until he retired several years ago. After the death of Mrs. Duncan he went to Chicago and spent two years at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Katherine Twedell. He then returned to his home here and about two months ago went to Lovilia to visit a daughter and family and where he suffered a stroke of paralysis on April 1, which resulted in his death.

Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Duncan, including three sets of twins. Five children, Edward L., Elizabeth, Agnes, Thomas and John have passed away. Those living are Mrs. Mary Fisher, of Brainerd, Minn.; Mrs. Madeline Messenger, of Rawlins, Wyo.; Mrs. Margaret Richmond, of Lovilia; and Mrs. Katherine Twedell, of Chicago, Ill. The twins were Mary and Elizabeth, Madeline and John, and Margaret and Agnes.

Besides the four daughters Mr. Duncan is survived by one brother, Clint A. Duncan, of Falls City, Nebr.; one sister, Mrs. Plina Sims, of Omaha, Nebr.; 17 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Three grandsons are serving in the U.S. Navy, Joseph Messenger in the Aleutians; Edward Messenger at Atlanta, Ga.; and Jack Messenger in the Philippines.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Father Charles O'Connor, were held at 10 o'clock Monday morning at the Sacred Heart church in Chariton and burial was in Calvary cemetery.
