Cecil Lee Downey passed away peacefully on July 16, 2011. He was born on September 2, 1916, to Herbert Cecil and Sarah Annie Redding Downey in Lorena, Texas.

Cecil married Reba Ethel Pittman in 1941, then served in the U.S. Army in World War II in England, France, and Germany. When he returned to Waco, Texas, after the war, he received a business degree from Baylor University. His daughter, Nancy Beth, was born in Waco, then his son, Donald David, was born in Corpus Christi.

Cecil worked with Sears, Roebuck & Co. for more than 30 years. After his retirement, he enjoyed monthly lunches with fellow retirees. He enjoyed woodworking, golf, travel, watching games, crossword puzzles and jumbles (always doing them in ink), but most of all, reading. He taught his children to love reading and to be lifelong learners. He also enjoyed keeping 'family trees' for his family and Reba's family. He loved finding the humor in all situations and giving hugs that might break your ribs.

After Reba's death, he married Noella Theriot Caldwell and acquired five stepchildren and four more grandchildren. He loved doing things with his new family, just as he had with his own children.

Cecil was preceded in death by his parents, his two loving wives, his sister and her husband (Adrienne and Frank 'Windy' Poole), and his stepson, Robert Caldwell.

Cecil is survived by his daughter, Nancy (Charles) Huth, son Rev. Donald D. Downey, his grandson, J.C. Trevino, IV, his granddaughter, Emily Huth, and his nieces Martha (Steve) Northup and Margaret Poole. Also surviving are his stepchildren Mary, (Steve) Church; daughter-in-law, Zilza Caldwell; stepson Patton (Jaci) Caldwell; James (Joy) Caldwell, and stepson, Terry (Monica) Caldwell. He had six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren from his second family.

Cecil is also survived by three sisters-in-law; Lois Rucinski, Hazel Cypert, and especially Clethal 'Keck' Jones, who has cooked and cared as well as fought with him for the past eight years.

In lieu of flowers, Cecil requested that you make contributions to First Presbyterian Church in Portland, Texas. If you prefer, if Cecil ever did anything for you or taught you how to do something, please extended that same kindness to others. He enjoyed life and people and would like to know his friends and family are doing the same.

Special thanks go to Pastor Amy Lawrence and other members of First Presbyterian Church, as well as the doctors, nurses and others at the dialysis clinic who helped him over the last eight years, and the doctors, nurses, therapists, technicians, and staff at Spohn Shoreline Hospital who helped him in his last illness.

A Visitation was held Monday, July 18, 2011 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Seaside Funeral Home.

A Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at 10:00 A.M. at First Presbyterian Church.

Interment followed at Seaside Memorial Park
