William Wilson Stilwell was the son of James H. Stilwell (Apr. 1820, NC-Mar. 10, 1907, AR) and Rebecca Twitty (1820, SC-Before 1850, Marshall Co., TN). William was living in Marshall County, Tennessee, in November 1850 (1850 US Census). During the Civil War he enlisted as a private and was mustered into Company D, 16th Missouri State Militia Cavalry. He married Mary Elizabeth Florence in Webster County, Missouri, December 20, 1864. After the war he moved to California where he had became a farmer outside Santa Maria, Santa Barbara County, by 1880 (1880 US Census). William was a member of Santa Maria's Admiral Foote Post, No. 89, Grand Army of the Republic. He filed for a Civil War veteran's pension at Santa Maria September 4, 1890, and received application No. 941,706 and certificate No. 697,737. William and Mary were residing at Montecito, Santa Barbara County, in 1900. Mary's widowed mother, Elizabeth Florence, was living with them. Soon thereafter William and Mary returned to Santa Maria, where William registered to vote in 1901 (1901 Santa Barbara Great Register). William remained at Santa Maria until he died. After his death Mary filed for a Civil War widow's pension at Santa Maria April 8, 1909, and received application No. 917,334 and certificate No. 687,393.
