Born 23 June 1925 on the Leatherwood Homeplace in Western Oklahoma to parents Jessie Burrell and Katie Carrie née Sullins Leatherwood. and siblings were Nina, Jimmie, Butch and Ron. He attended Port School in Washita County, Oklahoma and finished the 9th grade. Feeling strongly about the Japanese betrayal after Pearl Harbor, JB joined the United States Coast Guard in the summer of his 18th year. He served in the Atlantic and Pacific aboard the USS Samuel Chase as a Landing Craft Pilot, and was honorably discharged in 1946.

Dad Married Mom, Eva Mae Rector May 01 1948, and they had five sons: Larry, Don, Terry, Burrell and Mark.

He worked on the Homeplace Farm, also farmed on his own. He taught himself electronics and spent most his life as a television repairman. He was a quiet honest man who quit dishonest employers and started his own repair business and thrived due to his honesty and country boy fairness. He taught us to deal honestly with everyone you deal with, say it like it is, and love your family.

He loved panning for gold on our many trips to the Oregon mountains, while his kids were swimming in the rivers. He was a member of the South Salem Golf Club in Salem, Oregon and the Westbury Country Club in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Dad passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on July 12, 1990.
